What It’s Really Like to Start Therapy with a Maryland Therapist

What happens once you decide you’d like some support?

You’ve finally decided to reach out for support—but now what?

Maybe you’ve been carrying the weight of anxiety, grief, or burnout for longer than you care to admit. You’ve read the articles, talked to friends, maybe even bookmarked a few therapist websites. But the thought of actually scheduling that first session? It feels overwhelming.

If you’re wondering what it’s really like to begin therapy with a Maryland therapist—especially someone who gets the emotional complexity you’re holding—you’re in the right place.

Let’s walk through what happens before, during, and after that first session, so you can feel more grounded and less alone in the process.

Before the first session: The emotional prep work

It’s not uncommon to have worries or concerns about what therapy will be like.

Even before we meet, it’s common to feel a swirl of emotions—relief, fear, hope, and maybe even guilt. You might be thinking:

  • “What if I don’t know what to say?”

  • “What if I cry the whole time?”

  • “What if I can’t cry?”

These are all valid feelings. Reaching out for therapy is a vulnerable act, and it’s okay to feel uncertain. My role is to create a space where you can bring all of that—no judgment, no pressure. I offer a free, 15-minute introductory phone call so we can chat briefly before setting up an appointment to see if I might be a good fit for what it is you are looking for in terms of therapy. If I’m not the right fit, for whatever reason, I’m happy to offer any information I have that might point you in a better direction. If it does seem like we’re a good fit, we’ll schedule a time to meet.

Once you schedule, you’ll receive an email inviting you to a secure client portal. There, you can complete initial paperwork at your own pace. This step helps us maximize our time together and ensures that our first session is focused on you, not forms.

the day of: Navigating nerves & Logistics

Whether we’re meeting in my College Park, Maryland office or virtually, I aim to make the experience as comfortable as possible. You’ll receive clear instructions on how to find the office or log in to our secure video platform. I’ll also let you know how to reach me in case you have a hard time finding the office or logging in online.

It’s normal to feel nervous. Many clients tell me they were anxious about being judged or saying the “wrong” thing. Let me reassure you: there’s no script here. This is your space to explore, question, and just be.

the first session: A Collaborative conversation

Whether we meet online or in-person in College Park, therapy is a team effort.

Our initial session is about building a connection. We’ll discuss:

  • Your reasons for seeking therapy: What’s been going on? What prompted you to reach out now?

  • Your goals: What would you like to achieve through our work together?

  • Your history: Any relevant background that you feel comfortable sharing.

This isn’t an interrogation; it’s a conversation. You set the pace, and you decide what feels safe to share. My job is to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and begin to understand your unique story. This is also the time where you can feel out how we interact and if you think that we are a good fit for working together.

after the session: reflecting and planning

At the end of our first meeting, we’ll discuss next steps. Most clients find that weekly sessions provide the consistency needed for meaningful progress. We’ll schedule our next appointment and talk about any initial reflections or questions you might have. Most clients meet with me on the same day and time each week so that there is predictability in the schedule and you know that you have a spot that’s “yours”.

You might leave the session feeling lighter, or you might feel emotionally drained. Both responses are normal. Therapy is work—but it’s work that leads to growth, healing, and self-discovery. It also can take time to build up to some of the things you’d like to address. It’s ok if you aren’t ready to jump into all of them the first time we meet.

Common concerns: addressing your worries

“What if I don’t feel a connection?”

Therapeutic fit is crucial. If, after meeting or after a few sessions, you feel that we’re not the right match, I encourage you to share that with me. I can provide referrals to other Maryland therapists who might be a better fit for your needs. There is no way that one therapist is the best fit for everyone. You deserve support that works for you, whether that’s with me or someone else.

“Will I have homework?”

Sometimes, yes. Homework might include journaling, practicing new coping strategies, or reflecting on certain topics. These assignments are collaborative and tailored to your goals. There’s no grades or evaluations! But I do find that many people get a lot out of working towards their goals throughout their week.
